Amazon's 2026 Holiday Hiring: 300,000 Nationally, About 1,400 Here
Amazon announced its 2026 holiday hiring plan on Tuesday, October 20: more than 300,000 people across its U.S. core operations network, the warehouses, sort centers and delivery stations that get packages from a shelf to a porch. That's up from the 250,000 the company announced in each of the last three seasons.
Amazon's own announcement doesn't break the number down by state or city. The local figure comes from KOLD 13 News, which reported the same day that Amazon expects to hire about 1,400 people in the Tucson area and roughly 7,000 across Arizona. Either way, it's the largest single holiday hiring number we've seen for Southern Arizona this fall, and it lands on a local job market where Target, Kohl's, the shipping companies and every big-box store on Oracle and Broadway are fishing in the same pond.
The Pay and the Healthcare Change
Amazon says seasonal employees earn an average of $20 an hour, full-time core operations employees start at no less than $20, and average hourly pay across its operations workforce is close to $24. That's an average, not a promise for every shift, so check the rate on each posting before you apply.
The bigger news for seasonal workers is healthcare. Starting January 1, 2027, seasonal employees who work at least 30 hours a week will be eligible for the same healthcare benefits Amazon already offers full-time staff. People hired before January 1 pick up coverage on that date, and anyone hired on or after it is covered from day one. Amazon says plans start at $5 a week with $5 copays.
For context, Arizona's minimum wage and Tucson's higher city minimum both rise on January 1. Our 2027 minimum wage breakdown has the new figures and where each one applies. Amazon's $20 seasonal average sits above both.
How Amazon Posts Its Holiday Jobs
Amazon doesn't hold a single big hiring day for the holidays. It releases new roles every week from October through December, and the company warns that seasonal slots can fill quickly.
Amazon's own alert options are a sign-up at amazon.com/localjobs and a text alert (text NEWJOB to 31432). On TucsonHIRED, the Amazon jobs in Tucson search pulls local listings into one place, and a free job alert sends new ones to your inbox.
Amazon also says seasonal roles can lead to full-time jobs, and that many of its trainers and managers started out seasonal. If you want a foot in the door rather than holiday cash, say so when you apply and ask about conversion when you start.
What It Means for Tucson Job Seekers
This is entry-level warehouse and logistics work for the most part, the kind of job where reliability and stamina matter more than a resume. Amazon's announcement doesn't list specific job titles, so the roles below reflect the kind of work its operations network runs on rather than a confirmed list of Tucson openings.

- Order pickers and packers: pulling items and boxing them for shipment. Order picker and packer careers
- Material handlers and package sorters: unloading trucks and moving freight through a building. Material handler careers
- Shipping and receiving: checking freight in and out. Shipping and receiving careers
- Inventory roles: counting and tracking stock. Inventory specialist careers
- Delivery drivers: Amazon's last-mile routes run through local delivery partners, which hire drivers on their own. Delivery driver careers
Expect shift work, including nights and weekends, and a job that keeps you on your feet for most of a shift. If you're also weighing other warehouse work, Shamrock Foods is hiring at its new Marana distribution center off I-10, a year-round option rather than a seasonal one.
