A Quiet Year for Big Announcements, a Busy Week for Tucson Postings
Most years, early fall brings a parade of big holiday hiring headlines. Not this year. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported on October 1 that announced seasonal hiring plans are running 23% behind this time last year. In its 2026 holiday hiring outlook, the firm noted that Amazon, Target, Kohl's, UPS, FedEx and the Postal Service had yet to publish 2026 targets, and that retailers are leaning on automation, current employees and on-call pools before adding brand-new seasonal hires. Michaels is one of the few big names with a number out, at more than 10,000 seasonal workers nationwide.
Here's the part that matters in Tucson: the national quiet hasn't stopped local stores from posting. Seasonal listings went up across town this week, and they're the real signal. When companies lean on their own people first, the brand-new seasonal spots that do open tend to fill fast. Waiting for a headline is how you end up applying after Thanksgiving.
🎯 Target's Rita Road Fulfillment Center
If you've driven I-10 past the Rita Road exit on the southeast side, you've seen it. Target built its roughly one-million-square-foot Target.com fulfillment center there to ship online orders, and it was planned from the start around the holiday crush. Every fall it staffs up again, and it has a seasonal warehouse associate posting live right now.
Much of the day-to-day surge through Christmas is covered by staffing agencies, so if you want warehouse hours fast, don't stop at Target's own listing. Search warehouse and staffing jobs too. Some of those daily assignments land in the same building.
Target's stores are hiring as well. A seasonal 4 a.m. inbound stocking job is posted for Tucson, the classic holiday shift: unload the truck, fill the shelves, done before the doors open.
🛍️ Stores Posting Seasonal Holiday Jobs Now
These seasonal postings are live in the Tucson area this week. Listings change daily, so treat this as a starting point.
- Bath & Body Works: seasonal retail sales associates for its Park Place and Foothills Mall stores. The postings advertise daily or weekly pay options and an employee discount.
- Kohl's: a seasonal overnight stockroom operations associate and a seasonal truck unloader with a 6 a.m. start.
- Macy's: retail sales associate openings at its Tucson Mall store, the chain's only Tucson location now that Park Place's Macy's is long gone.
- Whole Foods: part-time seasonal overnight team members handling stocking, inventory and receiving.
- Cost Plus World Market: seasonal stock associates who unload trucks, process freight and keep the sales floor filled.
- Under Armour: a seasonal stock associate on a 5 a.m. shift, listed in Marana.
- Cavender's: a seasonal stocker for the western-wear store.
- Ross: early-morning and overnight stock associate openings, the kind of work that ramps up as holiday freight rolls in.
Notice the pattern. Most of these are stocking and freight jobs on early or overnight shifts. That's where holiday staffing is tightest, and where someone with open availability stands out.
🔒 Security and Other Holiday Work
Securitas is hiring seasonal security officers in Tucson, part time with weekly pay. Holiday crowds at malls and shopping centers mean extra posts to fill.
Halloween comes first. Spirit Halloween is staffing eight Tucson-area stores through early November, and many of those workers roll straight into Christmas retail. On the south side, Bass Pro Shops is holding on-site interviews October 7 and 8 for seasonal, part-time and full-time jobs, including Santa's Wonderland roles. And down the road from Target's warehouse, the new Sprouts in Rita Ranch is set to open October 30.
💰 What Seasonal Jobs Pay in Tucson
Pay depends on the employer, the role and the shift, and many postings list a rate, so check each one before you apply. The legal floor depends on where the store sits, not where you live. Inside Tucson city limits, the 2026 minimum is $15.45 an hour. In Marana, Oro Valley and unincorporated Pima County, the Arizona minimum of $15.15 applies. Our breakdown of Arizona's 2026 minimum wage and our guide to working in Marana and Oro Valley explain the difference.
✅ How to Land a Seasonal Job This Year
- Apply in October. With fewer brand-new seasonal spots nationally, early applicants get the interviews and the better shifts.
- Lead with your availability. Say plainly which nights, early mornings and weekends you can work, and whether you can cover Black Friday week and the days around Christmas.
- Go where the shifts are. Early-morning and overnight stocking jobs are posting first. If you can handle a 4 a.m. alarm, you have options.
- Meet employers in person. The Pima County Community Job Fair on October 6 lists warehouses among its ten industries.
