What Sun Van Does, and Why It Keeps Hiring Drivers
Sun Van is the paratransit side of Sun Tran. It gives door-to-door rides to people whose disability keeps them from using the regular fixed-route buses, and eligibility is based on disability, not age. Riders book trips by phone up to a week ahead, and fares are currently free under direction from the Mayor and Council.
That makes the driver's seat a people job as much as a driving job. Sun Van describes the work as helping seniors and people with disabilities stay independent and get to the places they need to go: medical appointments, work, the grocery store. Drivers who are patient, punctual and comfortable helping a passenger board are the ones it's looking for.
The fleet has been getting newer, too. In 2025, Sun Van rolled out 50 new vehicles, including five all-electric vans in a pilot program, paid for largely with a federal transit grant, KOLD reported at the time.
The Wednesday Open House: How It Works
Sun Van started the weekly walk-in events in February and still lists them on its jobs page. Show up any Wednesday between 9 and 11 a.m. at 3401 E. Ajo Way, on the south side east of the Kino sports complex. The next three fall on October 21, October 28 and November 4.
According to Sun Van, you can:
- Fill out an application on site
- Interview on the spot
- Talk one-on-one with the hiring team and hear from current drivers
- Tour the facility and the vans
✅ What You Need to Qualify
- Age 21 or older.
- A current, valid Arizona driver's license. A regular license is fine. No CDL.
- An acceptable 39-month Motor Vehicle Record. That's your driving history for the last three-plus years.
- A completed application. Do it on site, or download Sun Van's fillable application ahead of time.
Sun Van's van operator posting also lists the screening steps: background checks, a pre-employment drug screen and a DOT physical. Basic reading, writing and math, and the ability to follow instructions and communicate well with passengers, round out the requirements.
💰 Pay, Benefits and Schedule
Sun Van's jobs page lists van operators at $18.16 an hour while in training and $19.39 an hour after. That's a few dollars above Tucson's 2026 city minimum wage of $15.45, which we broke down in our 2026 minimum wage guide.
Full-time benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, a 401(k), and paid sick, holiday and vacation time. Training is paid.
One thing to know going in: shifts may include Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Paratransit runs when riders need it, so weekend availability helps.
Sun Van is also hiring a Road Supervisor at $25.45 an hour to monitor drivers on the road, run evaluations, investigate complaints and accidents and help with scheduling and training, and a Utility Worker at $17.91 an hour with raises each contract year. The utility job requires age 21, janitorial experience and a valid Arizona license with a clean record.
