That's a full-service diner's worth of new Tucson restaurant jobs, from the grill to the floor to a brand-new bar.

A New Diner in the Old Welcome Diner Space
If you've driven Broadway between downtown and the university, you know the building. The Welcome Diner closed in 2020, and the corner at Euclid has been waiting for a second act ever since. The Arizona Daily Star reported in late October that Sally Kane has leased the property and plans to reopen it as Howdy Diner.
Kane already runs the Coronet at 198 W. Cushing St. in Barrio Viejo, so this isn't a first-time operator learning on the job. She's partnering with Chris Hallverson, and Guy Torey is the operations manager. The name comes from family history: Kane's father ran a guest ranch, and "Howdy" was how she greeted the guests.
What's on the Menu, and How the Space Will Work
Think diner classics: silver-dollar pancakes, pigs-in-a-blanket for the kids, pastrami sandwiches, burgers and meatloaf. The full menu is planned for both sides of the building.
The layout is where the job picture gets interesting. The familiar facade stays, and the main dining room keeps traditional table service. The back room, which customers never used before, is being turned into a walk-up counter, a bar and an outdoor patio. Seating climbs to about 130, with roughly 36 parking spaces on site. One building, two ways to eat, three meals a day, every day of the week. That takes a deep bench of staff.
What It Means for Tucson Job Seekers
Howdy Diner hasn't announced hiring, a headcount or pay yet. But a 130-seat diner open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week runs on multiple shifts, and hiring for a new restaurant usually starts in the weeks before the doors open. These are the roles a place like this typically fills. They're anticipated, not posted:
- Kitchen: short-order and line cooks who can keep up with a breakfast rush, prep cooks and dishwashers. Leadership roles like kitchen manager often go first.
- Dining room: servers for table service and hosts to run the door on busy weekend mornings.
- Counter and bar: the new walk-up counter and bar point to counter staff and bartenders.

Pay Rules on This Stretch of Broadway

Arizona's statewide floor is lower, at $15.15 now and $15.65 in January. Tipped roles like serving and bartending follow separate rules, so ask how base pay and tips work when you interview.
