TUCSON, AZ — Seven Tucson-area drive-thrus went dark last week when Salad and Go closed every one of its locations for good, and the crews who worked them are now looking for their next shift. The sites themselves are not staying empty: Dutch Bros has moved to buy the whole Arizona and Nevada portfolio and turn them into coffee shops.

The company pointed to a stack of pressures rather than one single cause: sustained softness in consumer demand, earlier growth decisions that did not pay off, and rising costs. It also noted that a Cyclospora outbreak in July, in which Salad and Go itself was not implicated, shook confidence across the whole fast-casual category at exactly the wrong moment.

The brand started in Gilbert in 2013 with a straightforward pitch: fresh food, drive-thru speed, low prices. Founders Tony and Roushan Christofellis sold the company to an investment firm in 2021 and went on to launch Angie's Grill, which has several locations in the Tucson area and is not affected by the closure.

Dutch Bros Is Buying the Locations

Court filings show Dutch Bros plans to acquire the Salad and Go locations across Arizona and Nevada, taking over the leases and the equipment and converting them to sell coffee, beverages and food. A $10 million deposit has already been paid, with the balance due at closing.

The reason this deal moves fast is the buildings themselves. These are drive-thru-only formats, which is exactly how Dutch Bros builds. Court documents note the sites would not require alterations or major maintenance to convert.

Dutch Bros already has a serious Arizona footprint. The company was founded in Grants Pass, Oregon in 1992 by brothers Dane and Travis Boersma, moved its headquarters to Tempe in June 2025, and now operates more than 100 locations across the state, including a long list in Tucson.
