Trader Joe's Opens on Broadway & Plumer, Tucson's First New Store in Over Two Decades
Published: June 3, 2026 | By TucsonHIRED Team
Midtown finally got its grocery store. Trader Joe's opened the doors of its newest Tucson location on Friday, May 29, at the corner of East Broadway Boulevard and South Plumer Avenue, and it brought a fresh batch of crew jobs to the heart of the city. Trader Joe's hired more than 30 new crew members for the store and transferred additional staff from nearby Tucson locations to round out the team.
A Long-Awaited Opening on the Sunshine Mile
The new store sits at 2150 E. Broadway Blvd., along the historic Sunshine Mile, the mid-century commercial stretch of Broadway that's been steadily revitalized over the past few years. The grocer moved into a reconfigured parcel that was once a dollar store, with developers reworking the corner to add the extra parking a Trader Joe's draws.
It's a milestone for the chain in the Old Pueblo: this is the first brand-new Trader Joe's to open inside the city in more than two decades, joining the company's other stores around the Tucson area. The corner had long been on the city's radar, too. Rio Nuevo backed an incentive effort in 2023 to land a boutique grocery for the Broadway corridor, part of a years-long push to bring everyday grocery options closer to the urban core.
Store Captain Chad Anderson and the crew cut the ribbon just before the 8 a.m. opening, with a reusable-bag giveaway and product samples for the first wave of shoppers. The store is now open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
What the Opening Means for Tucson Job Seekers
The initial hiring push for this store is already done, but that doesn't mean the door is closed. Grocery is one of the most consistently hiring sectors in any city, and Trader Joe's is known for running rolling crew hiring as a new store finds its rhythm, covers turnover, and heads into busy seasons. A brand-new location in midtown adds one more steady, walkable employer to the neighborhood.
Trader Joe's keeps its staffing model simple. Most front-line workers are "crew members" who rotate across the whole store, stocking shelves, running registers, building displays, helping customers, and working the back room, with chances to move up to leadership roles over time. If you want to work there, the most direct route is to apply with Trader Joe's directly, in store or through the company's careers page, and to keep an eye on local grocery and retail listings as openings come up.
